Introduction to Hitchikers |
What is a hitchhiker?
A hitchhiker is any organism that is introduced into the reef tank
accidentally or incidentally usually through the introduction of live rock into
the tank. Many people panic upon seeing anything unexpected show up in
their tanks. Although some hitchhikers can be detrimental to the tank,
most are not and add to the diversity and interest of the tank. Some are
even beneficial. Another way to look at it is that all organisms
introduced into the tank attached to live rock are essentially hitchhikers.
Identifying these hitchhikers and determining if they are good or bad is the main purpose of this section.
